Storm prompts big clean up with pooch in tow

Portland Public Works employee Joe Brenner plows every storm with his best friend, a 2-year-old chow named Shadow. "Every storm, he goes with me. I wouldn't have it any other way."

WINDHAM (NEWS CENTER Maine) — Crews throughout Maine were busy Friday keeping the roads clear during this fast-moving storm, especially in southern Maine where the snow started falling after midnight.

Public work crews in Windham began salting major roads at 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Drivers had to be extra careful after hitting patches of black ice trying to keep up with the snow. The storm hit before some homeowners had a chance to finish their fall cleanup. A number had to shovel and remove snow mixed with leaves. Some residents said they didn't expect to put away their snow equipment any time soon.

Portland Public Works employee Joe Brenner spent most of the day clearing Forest Avenue and Riverside, but he has the best companion to get him through 12-plus hour shifts: his 2-year-old chow named Shadow loves riding in the cab

"The longest he has been is a 27-hour shift all night, no problem, he is good," Brenner said. "I got a bowl and his water he is good."
