A love story fit for the gym

This Maine couple lives together and lifts together.

PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Mainers Caroline Conners and Austin Spencer lift each other up -- literally and figuratively. They are two of the top CrossFit competitors in the Northeast, and are on a mission to make it to the CrossFit games.

Their love of their sport is obvious, as is their newfound love for one another. The two met doing CrossFit about five years ago and became friends. As they added weights and workouts to their CrossFit routines, Austin and Caroline's muscles grew, and so did their relationship.

"We were just friends, then one day it just clicked,” says Conners.

Now, this couple lives together and lifts together, spending hours in day in this gym climbing toward one goal. Becoming the top male and female CrossFit athletes in the country.

Conners didn't start her CrossFit journey with competition in mind.

"I said, look, I love working out, I love getting in shape, I just don't want to be too bulky,” says Conners.

That changed when she felt herself getting physically and mentally stronger, attaining her goals and challenging herself to achieve more.

"If you want to be strong and competitive, you have to build on what you have,” says Conners. “That aesthetic stuff doesn't matter anymore."

The work has paid off. Austin Spencer and Caroline Conners are ranked first the state of Maine and are both in the top ten in the Northeast. They will compete in the regionals together in May in the hopes of advancing to the Crossfit games competition together, and for the first time.

"That would be the most amazing thing ever," says Conners.

A goal that's within reach if they continue to work together.

"I actually don't think I could have been here without her,” says Spencer. “It's been pretty amazing."
