Political Brew: Legislative session's chaotic end can be traced to its beginnings

PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine)-- This week on "Political Brew," NEWS CENTER Maine analysts Phil Harriman and John Richardson lay some of the blame for the stalemate in the legislature at the feet of leaders who did not establish relationships at the very start of the two year session.

Richardson, a former Speaker of the House, says there was a potential deal to be had covering several of the biggest issues left on the table. But he adds "If you have never established personal relationships and trust between the parties, the kind of deals at the very end, the kind of 'grand bargain,' four or five issues, never come to fruition."

Harriman adds that at the end of a session, when people are tired and frustrated, leadership needs to shine.

They also discuss the Maine Supreme Court ruling giving the go ahead to ranked-choice voting for the June primaries. Richardson says the issue is settled for now. But Harriman says the fight isn't over. "Coming to a courthouse near you in November, the constitutionality is going to have to be answered."

Harriman and Richardson also discuss other topics, including the nomination of CIA Director Mike Pompeo to be Secretary of State, and their thoughts about the late Barbara Bush, including a memorable "ride-along" Harriman once had with the First Lady.
