NEWS CENTER'S Melissa Kim offers insight on Korea

Former NEWS CENTER colleague Melissa Kim is a first generation American with a unique perspective on her parents' homeland Korea. The Olympic opening ceremonies were emotional for her and an opportunity to talk with friends about life in a divided Korea.

(NEWS CENTERMaine) -- The 23rd Winter Olympics had an accomplishment on day one. North and South Korea came together in sport after 64 years of a military stare down.

"I remember when that happened in Athens," said former NEWS CENTER reporter Melissa Kim.

Melissa is Los Angeles born and raised as well as Johns Hopkins educated, She also spent Saturday's in "Korean School" growing up so that she could learn the culture of her parents who immigrated to the U. S.

She is fluent in the language and has visited Korea about a dozen times.

"I got a little emotional watching opening ceremonies," she said.

She points out there are enormous differences between North and South. However she adds, "Even for me, when I go back to Korea now. South Korea is so hip, so modern technologically, the cool factor, everything."

She laments that north of the border people have practically nothing. She notes that many young Koreans would like to see the country reunited. Older Koreans are more skeptical.

"I'm an educated human being. I know there are human rights issues involved. I know about all that stuff, but at the same time, you have to think about this ultimate perspective because at the end of the day we are all people."
