From homeless to helping: Maine mom helps hurricane victim

An Alna woman, who was once homeless herself, is raising money to build a mobile home for a veteran displaced by Hurricane Maria.

ALNA (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- It’s been six months since Hurricane Maria pounded Puerto Rico and many parts of the U.S. territory are still without power.

An island native, Aurita Maldonaldo, served in Afghanistan and is homeless. The mom-to-be is currently staying in temporary housing.

A Virginia based non-profit called HOME, or Home of Miracles and Embraces, is raising money to build her a mobile home. An Alna woman saw the call to action on Facebook.

Inspired by her own life experiences, Jenny Jordan decided to start an effort to raise funds to contribute to this cause.

“I remember being pregnant and I remember being homeless, and you know, not having anything," explains Jordan. "I came from nothing and I’ve had to work really hard to make life happen....I also had the help of strangers that didn't have to help me, didn't have to do anything.”

Jordan says she believes a little help can go a long way.

“I think a lot of people really want to help and don’t know how.”

She started painting rocks and selling them after the hurricane hit, and now students at several schools in the midcoast are joining her, creating an artistic army.

You can find the rocks at several stores and restaurants including Caper’s Catering in Boothbay Harbor and the Cracked Egg in Wiscasset. So far, she's raised more than $1,500.
