The projectile was caught in a local fishermen's gear, pulled aboard their boat and then taken to land. Officials believe it was found 12 miles off the coast of Harpswell.

HARPSWELL (NEWS CENTER Maine) — The State Police Bomb Squad removed what they say was "some form of a military ballistic projectile" from a dock in Harpswell Monday.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office responded to the suspicious object found on the docks of the Bailey Island Lobster Wharf around 10:30 Monday morning.

The projectile was caught in a local fishermen's gear, pulled aboard their boat and then taken to land. Officials believe it was found 12 miles off the coast of Harpswell.

The United States Navy and Maine State Police Bomb Squad were both notified. The bomb squad detonated the ballistic projectile at a local sand pit.

Officials say written on the projectile was "live ammunition".
