Body found is Wis. man who fell into Kennebec River

The body was found in the area of East Eden Flower Farm off Browns Point Road in Bowdoinham near Merrymeeting Bay, police said.

BOWDOINHAM, Maine — The body of a 35-year-old Wisconsin man who fell into the Kennebec River nearly a month ago has been found.

Bath police said David Henry Dieterich's body was found shortly after 8 a.m. Friday by deputies from the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Department, responding to a report of a body along the shore of the Kennebec.

The body was found in the area of East Eden Flower Farm off Brown's Point Road in Bowdoinham near Merrymeeting Bay.

Deputies identified the body as that of Dieterich upon arrival, police said, and assisted in taking it to the state Medical Examiner's Office in Augusta.

Police said Dieterich's family had been notified.

Dieterich, who was a resident of Racine, Wisconsin, was in Bath on a work assignment last month with his company Marshall Erecting.

The Coast Guard said it responded shortly before 10 p.m. April 18 to a report of a man "jumping" into the Kennebec River from a pier near Kennebec Tavern. Police later said the man had fell into the water.

Dieterich, a Bath Iron Works sub-contractor, was part of a small group of coworkers gathered on a floating dock by the north parking lot at Kennebec Tavern that had been roped off at the time of the fall, police said.

The group had been out socializing at several bars and restaurants in downtown Bath, and came across the area behind Kennebec Tavern, which was closed at the time and was not one of the places to which they had gone.

Witnesses told police it was "a surprise" when Dieterich had fell in the water, and that "there was no prior discussion or any indications he was going to jump." They said they think Dieterich accidentally fell in, as the dock was very unstable.

Police said no foul play was suspected.
