'Gone So Long' takes a look at strained relationships

In his latest novel, "Gone So Long," Andre Dubus looks at the complications of familial relationships and how the choices of our parents can affect our own.

(NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Andre Dubus III is a New York Times Best Selling author and a public speaker. Dubus grew up in Massachusetts, where he admits as a teenager he got into a lot of fights.

Writing saved his life.

When Dubus first started putting feelings to paper, it was a form of therapy for him. He's the author of seven books, including a memoir called, "Townie," in which he talks about that difficult past.

Now married with children of his own, his latest novel, "Gone So Long," looks at the relationship between parents and children. The story follows Daniel Ahearn, a man whose daughter was ripped from his hands after an impulsive act of violence on his part. Now in her forties, Ahearn's daughter Susan still suffers from trauma from that night, and now from her father reaching out to reconnect.
